One of the best parades / festivals I have experienced. Japan Parade / Street Festival focuses experiencing Japanese culture. From opening ceremonies to street festival end, you experience different aspects of their culture, especially food (street festival).
Not only experiencing a small part of the culture, learning / education was another major aspect. Immersion factors including Origami / Calligraphy / like I said, food have your curiosity going about learning more. Food: Ramen for 1st time placed that on my favorites list. I am a burger / hot dogs / fries / hoagies person. Charity tent where you could purchase a canvas bag or just make a donation shows how much the care about community. 3 tents with tourist information about Japan seriously had my curiosity.
Why Japan Parade / Street festival is one of the best I have experienced? Security is always a top priority with me. Special Thanks to NYPD remaining very visible but on the edges. In other words, didn't interfere with your enjoyment. Security was strict at the red carpet, requiring badges to enter the area. No alcohol sales, I know, this may be a downside for you. Living in an area that almost pushes alcohol sales at every street festival, reduces chances of something going wrong. Cultural immersion was huge with me! Loved every aspect of this side.
As the parade evolves, something I would seriously like to see / experience. Beliefs / religion / more supernatural side. It would help with immersion factor and give a more complete picture of the culture. A small section focused on history / Japan's contributions to the world and this country. Maybe this is pushing it, how Japanese Americans / immigrants were treated during WWII. Just a few ideas that seriously appeal to me. You probably have other interests.
Very special Thank You to everyone involved, especially Behind-The-Scenes. Without setup / teardown / planning / etc. no event could happen. I can only imagine amount of work in this area. 2026: seriously try to make it to NYC for Japan Parade. Bring the family for a unique / culturally immersive experience you will remember!
