Exceeded expectations in almost every aspect
Short tour part 1
review
New location / 90 artists and galleries / surprises, Affordable Art Fair has seriously evolved!
Starett-Lehigh Building added a much-needed improvement to atmosphere. Wider aisles made moving around easier. Even on a Saturday afternoon (usually very crowded), it was easy to check out the artists / galleries. Windows on outer walls connected you with outside world. Very different from museum / casino feel of previous location. Long rows of galleries / artists were an improvement but slight drawback. Easy to navigate, a little monotonous / repetitive (see Short Tour videos). Surprises did break this part up (example: selfie stations with a new twist) / food and beverage bar around the half-way mark. One end had a large area with seating / food bar and great views of the Hudson, seriously loved this part! Conversation with gallery rep. on what they heard: Fair was almost too big. Something very high on my list: between overall look / feel it felt connected to street level.
Another aspect very high on priority list: Security. People were present without interfering with your experience / enjoyment. One the edges in case something did happen. Basically, enough to make you feel safe without realizing it. There was a First Aid station available, just in case...
Education aspect: I did see families / kids throughout the day. Still remember some kids almost running toward a gallery excited to see art. Experiencing artists / creations from around the world, gave you a much wider perspective on cultural history. One gallery from Africa had paintings that made me think of different tribes. Sight Unseen / Snapshots from Gowanus in Transition showed us how places evolve and change. Overall, it is wild to experience life from an artist's perspective. Affordable Art Fair seriously nails this aspect down.
One aspect I would like to see evolve: Combine traditional with modern and future. Digital / more interactive feature / section could draw a wider demographic, not only of attendees but artists. Possibly encouraging people to try something new. Reality check: what you can do on a computer is limitless. Traditional (painting / drawing / sculpting / more) takes serious talent and skill. I remember a gallery having paintings where artist encoded a QR code in each one. Perfect example of my point.
People were purchasing art. Taking a short smoke break outside, I noticed several walking out with different size packages. Checking out the wall having lower priced art, it was almost empty by noon. Plus, I noticed longer lines at Groove (packing / shipping).
Overall: Affordable Art Fair Spring 2026 seriously exceeded my expectations. Expanded space to walk / move around. Large dining / rest area with great views of Hudson / city. Maintaining an excellent balance of the Affordable aspect (admission / art prices). Very wide variety of galleries / artists / genres. Adding in surprises / special sections to maintain your interest are only a few reasons. Plus, walking through a mini-food court when arriving. Next Fair, need to get down there when the burger place is still open... This is one event you don't want to miss in the future.
Please remember support the artists / galleries. Even if you don't have the cash to purchase something, there are other ways. Serious thank you to everyone at Affordable Art Fair for the hard work. Already looking forward to the next NYC event.
