Chairman Williams, Senator Ernst Issue Statements on Release of SBA-Michigan MOU
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25), Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business, released the full Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Michigan Department of State (MDOS), along with relevant Committee evidence regarding the ongoing investigation. Chairman Williams and Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, issued the following statements.
“Seeing the MOU with Michigan does nothing to ease our concerns about the SBA getting involved in federal elections,” said Chairman Williams. “In fact, this agreement confirms SBA employees are preparing to undergo trainings on how to best register voters rather than spend their time working to help struggling small businesses. I encourage all Americans to look at this agreement and decide if this is how they want their tax dollars spent. The SBA must end all these electioneering activities on behalf of President Biden and get back to their sole mission of supporting the needs of Main Street.”
---
“SBA’s MOU with Michigan proves that the agency is more concerned with registering voters than performing its official duties,” said Ranking Member Ernst. “This outrageous misuse and abuse of Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars will not go unpunished under my watch. Chairman Williams and I will continue shining a light on the SBA and exposing Biden’s bad actors.”

Background:
The House Committee on Small Business has been investigating the SBA’s activities involving voter registration and political travel. Just last month, a video recording of an SBA Special Advisor alleged that SBA Administrator Guzman was indirectly campaigning for President Biden, and other Democrat members of Congress in contested elections, on trips the Administrator takes around the Country.
The House Committee immediately began reviewing the SBA’s press releases to assess the accuracy of these statements. An initial review of the releases appeared to corroborate details of the SBA Special Advisor alleged in the video. Specifically, these press releases indicated that Administrator Guzman has traveled to critical battleground states for the upcoming election, including Michigan, and invited Democrat members of Congress on these trips nearly eight times more frequently than Republican members.
Further, the Committee released maps that overlay former SBA events, census data, Michigan Department of State data, and publicly reported information of Democrat-targeted voter blocs.
Nearly seven weeks after members on the House Committee requested information about the MOU, the SBA provided a briefing to the House Committee regarding the SBA’s voter registration activities. When asked about where the Committee can find information about these trips, the SBA simply directed the Committee to the Administrator’s Twitter account. Further, when asked about where small businesses can go on their website to find events with SBA officials, the SBA failed to provide a clear answer.
The Committee will continue to investigate the SBA’s voter registration and apparent political activities and overcome any obstructions the SBA throws in the face of the American people.
