Basically, pay to shop
Seriously, pretty much sums up Christkindlmarkt. Don't get me wrong, a lot of great vendors / shopping. I dropped around $100 in 2 Saturdays without even trying or eating there. Leading into the next part...
ArtsQuest is seriously out of touch with current reality / economic conditions. Saturday / Sunday: $14 (advance) $15 (day of) just to walk in. For a family: add on food, even non-alcoholic beverages, you could easily spend that before shopping / great artists and vendors. Spent most of it on holiday treats for myself (Stroopies / Non-pariells / etc.). You have to treat yourself this time of year! Seriously, realize the business side of Christkindlmarkt, the admission is way out of touch with current budgets. Especially when you consider what vendors are being charged to be there. Both times, I was seriously thinking about food, looked at prices, I can wait... ($4 for a 20 oz. Diet Coke). Best bet: Go Friday night when admission is free, especially if you have a family. Save your money for gifts / vendors / food / beverages.
If you are also looking for a holiday experience, seriously, don't waste your time. Christkindlmarkt does have lights / decorations / igloos / trees. Complete waste of time in this area (pretty much sums up Bethlehem.). Really does little to get you into the holiday spirit / mood. Check out downtown Easton / Illumination (Allentown).
Main advantage to Christkindlmarkt: Tents are warm! Unlike a lot of other holiday markets I frequent. The weekend admission is biggest issue here. Can I recommend it? Honestly, depends on your budget. I will be doing a little holiday shopping here to support indie vendors / creators, very little.
