Gov. Whitmer Celebrates Muslim American Heritage Month Honoring significant roles Muslim Americans have played in Michigan and beyond
LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is recognizing January as Muslim American Heritage Month, honoring and celebrating the significant roles of Muslim Americans in Michigan and beyond.
“During Muslim American Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the profound impact Muslim Americans have had on Michigan’s culture, economy, and communities,” said Governor Whitmer. “Let’s honor their achievements, reflect on their history, and recommit to building a Michigan where everyone can thrive.”
“Michigan is stronger because of our Muslim American community. Muslim Americans have shaped our state and nation in countless ways, enriching our communities and driving progress,” said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II. “As we celebrate Muslim American Heritage Month, we honor their achievements and reaffirm our commitment to building a Michigan where everyone’s contributions are valued and celebrated.”

“As one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the country, the Michigan Muslim community plays a vital role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and enriching the cultural tapestry of our state,” said Ahmad Alkaabi, Michigan Immigrant and Refugee Council.
“Michigan is home to a diverse Muslim-American community that has made significant contributions locally and across the country that are enriching and to be celebrated,” said Suzanne Sukkar, Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs Chair. “Here in Michigan, we proudly celebrate Muslim-Americans, and religious diversity, where people of different faiths live and work together, with respect and in friendship, making our communities stronger.”
"The month of Sha'ban is an opportunity for the believers to increase in their righteous acts and prepare themselves for the great month of Ramadan that follows," said Mohibullah Israr, Michigan Immigrant and Refugee Council.
"Muslim Heritage Month is a celebration of our rich history, diverse cultures, and the profound contributions of Muslims to the world,” said Sumaiya Ahmed Sheihk, Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission. “I join Michiganders in honoring the contributions and integral role of Muslim Americans in the economy, culture, and identity of the United States.”
“As a proud Muslim and Asian American, I see Muslim Heritage Month as an opportunity to celebrate our community’s resilience, contributions, and the rich cultural intersections that shape our shared identity,” said Rebeka Islam, Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission.
