LOS ANGELES (Wednesday, September 18, 2024) – The American Question delves into the heart of a divided America, exploring the historical and contemporary factors that have eroded our trust in our neighbors, communities, institutions, and government. The film takes viewers on a journey from historical empires to pivotal moments in modern America, through an independent team’s eight-year mission to discover the forces that shaped our now divided society.
Gravitas Ventures, an Anthem Sports & Entertainment Company will release The American Question on Tuesday, October 29th on all streaming on demand platforms (including Apple TV, Amazon’s Prime Video, YouTube TV and all leading cable on demand providers including Comcast’s Xfinity, Charter’s Spectrum, and AT&T’s DirectTV), home video DVD and Blu-ray, just ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election.
The film is currently available for pre-order on Apple TV here.
Today, Gravitas Ventures is also releasing the first trailer for the film: https://youtu.be/xgzq8aHcgOw
Eight years in the making, the film shares personal stories from diverse Americans in swing state communities in Pennsylvania and Michigan, and analysis from leading political scientists and historians. The American Question uncovers how economic shifts like globalization and the atrophy of local communities have fragmented the national identity.
“The American Question is a deeply personal film for me,” said director James Kicklighter. “Growing up in one of America's poorest regions, I experienced firsthand the stark divide between rural life and opportunities in big cities. Over the years, it has alarmed me how trust has eroded between these two Americas. Through bridging both worlds, I wanted to craft a film that could speak to my friends in Bellville, Georgia and Los Angeles. As The American Question explores the roots of polarization in our society, I hope that through dialogue, and most importantly, the solutions we present, our film shows that despite our differences, Americans share the same dreams.”
Bill Guentzler, Senior Vice President, Acquisitions & Operations, Gravitas Ventures, said: “At a time when America is more divided than ever, Gravitas is proud to bring The American Question to audiences across digital platforms this October as we head into the election. Director James Kicklighter dives into our shared history through personal stories in order to examine the moments and events that in hindsight should have brought us more together and through these stories aims to find the spirit that can reconnect us all.”
With input from numerous experts, including Colin Woodard (American Nations), Amy Chua (Day of Empire), Yuval Levin (The Fractured Republic), Tania Israel (Beyond Your Bubble), and narrated by political analyst, Guy Tal Seemann, The American Question seeks to answer the pressing question: can America rediscover its unifying values and restore trust among its people?
From acclaimed director James Kicklighter (The Sound of Identity), the film is produced by Guy Seemann, p.g.a. and James Kicklighter, p.g.a., and executive produced by S. Asher Gelman (Sabbath Queen, Afterglow).
“After traveling across the country for over 8 years, and hearing from so many regular Americans, I believe we are seeing the beginning of a new era in the American experiment,” said producer Guy Seemann. “New identities are being formed, and old ones are being left behind. As it was during the Revolutionary, Civil and First World War, everyone is asking themselves the question, ‘Who am I in this new world?’ There isn't just one ‘American Question.”
“When empires question their identity in times of monumental transitions, there is a lot of hardship, pain and mistrust that accompanies it. That is what we are seeing now.
The American Question dives deep into the reasons why this is all happening, and what we can do to pull ourselves out of this spiral. With all our mistakes, the world needs America in this time of turmoil, but more importantly, we need each other. I want to live in neighborhoods where people can depend and trust in each other again — instead of looking to Washington to define us as citizens.”
The film production team includes director of photography Jonathan Pope (Emmy® Award nominee, The Social Dilemma), editors Mohamed El Manasterly (Emmy® Award winner Welcome to Wrexham, The Square), James Kicklighter, J.D. Sievertson, ACE (The Chi, Cosmos) and Carlos Puga (Emmy® Award winner, True Life), featuring an original score by Nicolás Repetto (The Sound of Identity, A Run for More) and original animation by Filmograph (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Joker: Folie à Deux, John Wick).
UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. Kicklighter is represented by Travis Tammero (UTA) and Lucius Cary (Rain).
Seemann is represented by Travis Tammero (UTA).
