Green Party endorses "Arrest Netanyahu" protest in DC on July 24
WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party of the United States has endorsed the ANSWER Coalition's "Arrest Netanyahu" protest to take place in Washington DC on Wednesday, July 24.
Protesters, including Green Party members, will gather at Pennsylvania Avenue and 3rd Street NW at 11 am and will form a People’s Red Line For Palestine around the Capitol building.
The Green Party has repeatedly demanded a permanent ceasefire in Israel's war on Gaza and condemned Israel's ethnic cleansing, collective punishment, forced starvation, murder of aid providers and journalists, assaults by Israeli Defense Forces on refugee zones and corridors, and extermination of civilians in Gaza including thousands of children.
"The leadership of both major US parties have supported US aid for Israel's genocidal actions in Gaza. We expect no change in Democratic policy with Kamala Harris stepping in to replace Biden in the 2024 race, while Trump and the GOP clamor for an even more thorough annihilation of Palestinians," said Craig Cayetano, co-chair of the Green Party.
Greens have called for an immediate cutoff of President Biden's generous military aid for Israel and endorse BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) to place international pressure on Israel to observe human rights and international law.
The Green Party demands abolition of apartheid in Israel (in agreement with the recent International Court of Justice ruling), an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories and illegal settlements, and full human and political rights for Palestinians including the right of return.
"The International Criminal Court was right to indict Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes. He has made no secret of his disregard for Palestinian lives, while officials in his government have openly endorsed ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza. The US is culpable too — sending aid to countries that commit atrocities is also a war crime," said Madelyn Hoffman, co-chair of GPAX, the Green Party's Peace Action Committee.
Green Party leaders said that the failure to prosecute Bush administration officials for war crimes two decades ago gave subsequent presidents a license to commit new war crimes and lend help to allies committing war crimes. Bipartisan foreign policies in the Middle East and elsewhere have shredded international laws and agreements that were signed by the US and now risk triggering World War III.
Greens oppose all violence targeting unarmed civilians (nonviolence is one of the Green Party's Ten Key Values) and reject assertions by Israel's defenders that the current conflict began on October 7, 2023, that IDF has tried to avoid civilian casualties, and that mass murder of civilians and complete devastation of infrastructure in Gaza can be called self-defense.
The Green Party supports negotiation and application of international law and human rights guarantees to resolve conflict. In doing so, Greens have allied themselves with Palestinian, Israeli, Muslim, and Jewish organizations that promote peaceful solutions in the Middle East.
