LOS ANGELES (Thursday, June 20, 2024) – Marking an important milestone, Jewish Story Partners (JSP), a leading non-profit film funding organization, announced its new grantees today, with $500,000 distributed among 21 feature documentary films. Launched with support from Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation, JSP works to stimulate and support the highest caliber independent films that expand the Jewish story. Since its inception, JSP has already awarded a remarkable $3 million in grants to 101 projects.

Established in 2021, JSP was founded to respond to a critical gap in funding for independent Jewish film, as well as to the pressing need for stories that reflect the broad and surprising spectrum of Jewish experiences, cultures, and encounters. Never could we have imagined, however, that three years later, JSP would be so urgently and profoundly needed.

Meeting the moment, the new group of JSP grantees includes several projects that tell intimate human stories of October 7th and the war in Gaza. Among these are: The Abstract and the Very Real, Issa’s House, Kramer Brothers Film Untitled, A Letter to David, Missing Silver, Noga, and A Rhino’s Tale. “We’re pleased to support a subset of films that center personal experiences at the heart of a painful and intractable conflict— stories that offer nuance and humanity in the face of propaganda and extremism. We are more committed than ever to our mission of championing Jewish films that build empathy and understanding across divides, and that fight against ignorance and hate— quiet voices that might otherwise never be heard through the shouting,” said JSP Co-Executive Directors Roberta Grossman and Caroline Libresco.

In this round of granting, JSP received over 200 applications from filmmakers, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, who are compelled to tell a sliver of the Jewish story. In addition to making  grants to 21 excellent documentaries in this cycle, JSP provides awarded filmmakers with a Continuum of Support Program: advisory services at pivotal points in their process. And JSP’s Education-Impact Program, in partnership with distributor Good Docs, underwrites hundreds of free educational and community screenings of completed JSP-funded films.

Understanding the need to grapple with rising antisemitism, JSP’s new Holocaust Film Fund allows donors to designate their funding for documentaries on the Holocaust, while JSP’s Antisemitism and the Ecosystem of Hate Film Fund gives donors the chance to direct their support to projects probing antisemitism as well as the connections between antisemitism and other forms of group-based hate. These two new programs were first announced in late 2023, and today marks the first film projects receiving grants from these funds.

The new slate of JSP grants includes powerful documentaries from acclaimed directors Abner Benaim (Invasion), Rachel Boynton (Our Brand is Crisis), Tomer Heymann (Mr. Gaga), Brandon Kramer (The First Step), Hilla Medalia (Web Junkie), Dror Moreh (The Gatekeepers), Marlo Poras (The Mosuo Sisters), and Justin Schein (No Impact Man); as well as from award-winning producers including Judd Apatow (40-Year-Old Virgin), Yoni Brook (Philly D.A.), Lori Cheatle (Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart), Sigrid Dyekjær (The Territory), Ina Fichman (Fire of Love), Yael Melamede (Pay or Die), and Justine Nagan (America Reframed); and executive producers Bonni Cohen (An Inconvenient Sequel) and Simon Kilmurry (Desperate Souls, Dark City, and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy). See below for a full list.

The jury for the Spring 2024 funding round was composed of Sarah Feinbloom, Founder and Executive Director, Good Docs; Keisha N. Knight, Director of Funds and Advocacy, International Documentary Association (IDA); and Jason Spingarn-Koff, former Director of Netflix Original Documentary Programming and current Professor and Knight Chair in Climate Journalism, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

The jury shared the following statement: “It was an honor for us to unpack these excellent projects that represent the multiplicity of Jewish voices at home and internationally. In these fraught and disorienting times, the diverse group of documentaries we selected share a common, universal theme: our deepest need as human beings to communicate and be understood. At the same time, they uplift voices for peace, and underscore the critical importance of dialogue.” New grantees are listed below.

Among the excellent projects supported in past JSP funding cycles are films from such celebrated filmmakers as Sandi DuBowski (Sabbath Queen), Paula Eiselt (Under G-d), David France (At The Barricades), Mark Harris (A Gift for Laughter), Luke Lorentzen (A Still Small Voice), Marilyn Ness (Post Mortem), Pratibha Parmar (My Name is Andrea), Maxim Pozdorovkin (The Conspiracy), Petter Ringbom and Marquise Stillwell (This World is Not My Own), Joey Soloway (South Commons), and Dan Sturman (Four Winters, The Liegnitz Plot).

Twenty-five JSP-funded films are now complete and reaching audiences at festivals, in theaters, on television, and on streaming platforms. After premiering at Sundance 2023, where it won the U.S. Documentary Directing Award, Luke Lorentzen’s A Still Small Voice was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Cady Voge’s All We Carry made its world premiere in January 2024 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Called a “sumptuous piece of nonfiction” by Variety, Rachel Elizabeth Seed’s A Photographic Memory premiered at True/False Film Festival in March and screened at HotDocs this spring. Also premiering at HotDocs was Dan Habib and Samuel Habib’s The Ride Ahead. Justyna Gawelko and Tomer Slutsky’s Jews by Choice had its world premiere at the Krakow Film Festival in May. Sandi DuBowski’s Sabbath Queen recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Ilana Trachtman’s Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round premiered at the Maryland Film Festival before screening alongside Sabbath Queen, The Ride Ahead, and A Photographic Memory at DC/DOX this June. Paula Apsell’s Resistance - They Fought Back, Petter Ringbom and Marquise Stillwell’s This World is Not My Own, and Kit Vincent’s Red Herring are launching theatrical runs this spring.

JSP currently accepts submissions via one open call per year, with applications opening in November and juried decisions made in May. The Fall 2024 Reprise Grant cycle is now open to current JSP grantees only, with a deadline on August 9th, 2024.
