More than a man's search for his father's killer
Tribeca 2024
Found out about Searching for Amani through a media release. First thought: another documentary, medium to low on priority list. Something about the synopsis had my curiosity, never a good thing depending on point of view. Finally had a chance to watch it online.
I thought Amani was Simon Ali's father who was killed. Learning in the film it means Peace. What appeared a typical search for a murder turned into a very complex film and true story. Not really my kind of film, Searching for Amani was a HUGE surprise / didn't want to look away from screen.
The film has a slow start, touching on the basics of Stephen being killed / showing everyday life for Simon. Evolving into his quest to become and journalist and find who murdered his father. Searching for Amani evolves to the conflict between Pastoralists and Laikapia Natural Conservancy. How Stephen's murder may have been linked to the conflict.
You can search for the conflict / Conservancy / Kenya drought. It is a main plot, don't want this to turn into a short story.
Searching for Amani takes us into the conflict, at times I feared for Simon's safety / life. His desire for the truth never wavered. He is a true journalist, experiencing the story from a Pastoralist point of view. The film does not take sides in the conflict. Rather showing complexity of a problem that no one has control over, the drought. The film forces us to realize how interconnected we are. Not only with other people, but the entire planet.
