Release of Alaska Health Facilities Data Reporting Program 2021 Annual Report
The Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section is announcing the release of the Alaska Health Facilities Data Reporting Program 2021 Annual Report. This report is now available on our Data and Statistics page here.
This report contains information about Alaska inpatient and outpatient / emergency department facility discharges based on data from 24 non-military hospitals and 18 ambulatory surgical centers operating in-state during 2021. This provides valuable data to state and federal agencies, policy makers, researchers, health care providers, and others with an interest in Alaska public health issues. Subjects include the leading causes of hospitalization, emergency department utilization, procedures performed, billed patient charges, and length of stay.
In 2021, there were 57,723 inpatient discharges, 244,319 emergency department discharges, and 1,266,066 other outpatient discharges (surgery, lab, radiology, or other).
The top three leading causes of inpatient hospitalizations (based on principal diagnosis) were delivery of live born infants (7,014), septicemia (3,892) and COVID-19 (2,630). The top three leading causes of outpatient emergency department visits (based on the first listed diagnosis) were abdominal pain (11,815), chest pain (9,645), and alcohol-related disorders (9,359).

Other highlights for 2021:
- Charges for inpatient hospitalizations totaled ~$4.942 billion, up from ~$4.384 billion in 2020. The median charge was $43,573, up from $40,904 in 2020.
- Charges for outpatient emergency department visits totaled ~$1.177 billion, up from ~$1.005 billion in 2020. The median charge was $3,122, up from $2,852 in 2020.
- Charges for outpatient surgery procedures totaled ~$1.019 billion, up from ~$774 million in 2020. The median charge was $3,463, up from $3,052 in 2020.
- There were 4,184 COVID-19 related inpatient hospitalizations (including both principal and secondary diagnoses), up from 1,629 in 2020.This included 2,167 intensive care unit discharges, up from 902 in 2020.
- Charges for COVID-19 related inpatient hospitalizations totaled ~$595 million, up from ~$195 million in 2020. The average charge was $142,095, up from $119,579 in 2020. The average length of stay was 9.2 days, up from 8.2 in 2020.
