allentown film festival
Opening night was a perfect combination of several areas.
1) Tribute to film / movie history: CGI special effects of modern day to beginning of films / movies (nickelodeons). Black and white silent films honoring silent film greats like Charlie Chaplin. "The Coin" reminding me of a college course paying tribute to films that started the industry.
2) Setting the stage (forgive pun) for entire festival: Different genres / styles / filmmakers from around the planet (Russia / Iran examples). A few, welcome surprises.
3) Variety: Even if you are interested in a specific genre, give it a chance anyway. I was surprised with a few films that normally would ignore.
Living in this small town (technically a city), constantly hear some people talking about how great it is. Yeah right! Allentown Film Festival places the town / city on a completely different map in a major way! Global attention from filmmakers might convince political / business leaders to abandon the fucked up direction Allentown / Lehigh Valley in general have been going full speed in. Allentown / Lehigh Valley in general have been on a serious course for complete collapse. Allentown Film Festival is the first major step to correct it.
