American Hospitals Healing a broken system
Right off, film was as expected in the worst ways. Remember experiencing another part of the "Fix It" series several years ago. While making excellent points, film lacks almost any form of credibility. Some examples:
We are in 2023, almost every statistic / quote / text information in the film was dated from 2021 to 1980's. At no point was there any hint about current information / statistics.
Main question I still have: "Can you please state 2020 - 2021 operating cost of Lehigh Valley Health Network or any hospital in the country?" The had zero problem pointing out how much people pay in different circumstances (Medicaid / insurance main ones). At no point, even in closing credits did they even HINT about operating costs, especially during Covid. This would have added serious credibility to the film. Example: This is what is charged for a procedure vs. cost of hospital.
The pointed out how hospitals are closing inner-city locations and building new ones in suburbs. Presenting possible reasons (higher paying demographic example). While refusing to include other possibilities (safety of staff / patients, cheaper to build another hospital vs. repairing current one).
One part that made me almost laugh: They were tearing apart non-profit hospitals for liquid assets and not paying property tax. Film screening was at a non-profit location (ArtsQuest / Bethlehem).
Big surprise they included racism / racial disparities! This part seriously fucking pissed me off! There was no reason to bring in race / skin color. Everyone deals with / faces it at points and places. Get the fuck over it already. If someone is discriminated against at a hospital, legitimately, a lot of lawyers will jump on it. Don't forget about corporate / mainstream media + social media.
Shaking my head almost entire experience (looking up at times), by the end, had to go out / smoke a cigarette to take it down a level. Stayed for 1st 10 minutes of discussion. Could not take anymore biased / one-sided version of facts.
Watch the film, don't become a mindless slave / drone to what they are saying. Do research on all sides of this problem. They present it as a one-sided version you should believe. I can't remember the last time covering an event and being that pissed off. Trust me, in 10 years, number of events is in the thousands.
