Setting: Post Apocalyptic World
2 Main Characters: Unnamed
Overall Feel: Dark / Almost Hopeless / Challenging to figure out how it affects you on a personal level. Art / Design / Music mainly set tone throughout. Not big on dialouge.
Did a little research on this one. Ok, checked Wikipedia basically providing entire storyline. Could not wait to experience this one! Loved 80's anime in my early 20's (grew up in the 80's). Angel's Egg far exceeded any expectations. Special Thank You to Peter Tatara for the chance to cover / experience this!!!!
Angel's Egg starts with a young female finding a large egg. She chooses to protect it. Hiding it under her dress. Looking like she is pregnant. As the film progresses, she meets a young man in military dress, originally riding a tank. Fearing him, she runs and he follows her. Eventually, they travel together, gaining trust. Later in the film, we are introduced to fisherman. This is where things really start to get strange. We are asking same question as female. The fish are shadows, regardless of number of harpoons fisherman hit them with no damage.
Angel's Egg left me with a lot of questions. Some obvious: What happened to reach this post-apocalyptic world? Others on a deeper level: Are they living a dream / reality created by another person (actually asked by the male)? Why was the male only person to watch alien ship appear and leave?
I love this film for several reasons. Days later, still trying to figure how to personally interpret it. Several points in the film: wanting more of back story / answers to questions. Everything appeared to go full circle (beginning: alien ship landing / end: taking off). The entire film is additional layers of illusion (best word) and multi-layered. A biblical story became centralized later in the plot. Very end, it became extremely obvious. Angel's Egg challenges / forces us to experience those layers and illusions. Figure out how we can relate to them / characters. How, in moments, our lives may resemble that world. How our personalities are very similar to both characters. Cold / distant / warm / caring / very cautious with others.
Review is short version. While typing, realized some aspects I missed on day of screening.
If you have the chance, Angel's Egg is MUST EXPERIENCE. You don't watch / view the film, it goes with you after final scene. You are left with questions that need answered. You are interpreting it different ways as time passes. You are comparing every aspect to our world / society / your life and who you are. If lucky, finding those answers...
