Anna Sun
Pure, raw emotion from personal experience. Combine that with a feel "performing with friends". You have a very unique / intimate show to wind down 2023.
Anna did not hold back on emotion. Shortly after she started "There are going to be some sad songs. Fuck it get drunk later." Giving us a brief view into her personal life, some songs were about her mother having dementia. At one point, she wiped tears. Another song hit deep with me: running from an empty heart. Mixing with more upbeat pop / rock provided an excellent balance / emotion / feel. Especially with weather / December 30, final NYC trip of 2023.
Anna had a way of making everyone feel like they were friends. Very relaxed "I don't give a fuck. This is who you see on the streets / hanging out" attitude. Again, allowing everyone a brief view into her personal life / heart / soul. Here is where she balanced the raw emotion of some songs. Jokes, brief stories, everyone laughing, in a strange way a holiday feel to the performance.
Definitely experience Anna Sun live. If possible, solo performance. One last thing: Anna is on a very short list: major recording artists / performers could take some lessons from her show.
In case you are curious about my experience: At least a few thousand reviews over 11+ years / 3 media outlets (simple blog / A Valley and Beyond / Surreal ValeCity / FireCity Illusion).
