ATF Fashion house / Nyc
Balance Arts Center was location for February 2023 ATFH Fashion Week events. Important Note: Over 2 weeks later, something said during a break is still fresh with me "Tell Your Story". I did that in my 1st book and media (suicide attempt / survived violent crime / more). For Creators of any type / genre, completely believe that advice. Personal experience: Society teaches us to hide parts of our life if we want to succeed (lived on the street / mental health issues / suicide survivor / only a beginning). Telling your story not only gives credibility to what you create. You never know how many other people have gone through similar situations / events.
1st time decided to attend / cover fashion industry. Honestly, went in completely cold. Had no idea what to expect or cover it (even on photograph end). ATFH event was part of a perfect intro and education! Did not request media credentials due to previous reason. Easily worth ticket price on any level!
Right off, level of professionalism: Beyond excellent! Having no experience, purchased a ticket. Without going into details, representative from ATFH contacted people regarding the event prior to day / time. Upon arrival, was not sure if I was dressed high enough. Hey, when your only exposure is highlights online / other media, usually see suit / tie / tuxedo. My version of Business Professional: Dress Jeans / Button-down Shirt / nice Sneakers / Levi's faux leather jacket / aviator sunglasses. I walk everywhere, don't like to draw attention. Arriving at event, immediately made to feel comfortable / I belonged there. Did not go VIP (budget), when it was time to sit, felt like a VIP, very serious. Regardless of how much $ you spent / if you were known or not, approached and dealt with like you were an important part of event.
Fashion show was split into segments. With background / important information / introductions and more in between. This aspect was excellent, especially for a newbie. I have been to events that have a "zone out" factor. Maybe because I have covered that type of event several times. The segments were long enough to highlight / showcase each creation. Short enough to prevent that "Zone Out" (mind starts wandering / checking phone with increasing frequency). part. Breaks, in addition to above, like each segment, were perfect length. I realize models need time to change, did not even think about that part during segment breaks.
Actual fashion part: what I (stereotypically) expected from a New York fashion show: a few creations that most people could not afford or only wear on very special occasions (or streets of Times Square / Paris / etc.). Most were very impressive, ranging from formal occasion (wedding / special event / etc.) to fitness club workout. Overall flow of each segment: excellent mix / variety of colors / styles. Focus was on individual outfits vs. "running together" (same color / style for multiple models in sequence).
A networking event at the end provided the perfect opportunity for someone new to the scene in meeting new people and great conversation.
Special Thanks (very serious) to everyone involved for the hard work (especially Behind the Scenes) in making this part 1 of FireCity Illusion's intro to the fashion scene. Especially to everyone at ATFH for the professional / friendly attitude. Like I said, felt like a VIP from moment I walked in. Special mention to Photography by Amparo / Roophoto for great conversation (and not making me feel like an amateur using phone / still learning Cannon DSLR).
Before I forget, photography education part. Don't take eyes off runway. Pick your shots. Setting to "continuous" mode is a big help. Already looking forward to next year. Even if FireCity Illusion receives credentials, will be purchasing a VIP on another day.
