Incredible and obscenely lack of christmas city
Exception to article: Some shops like Into the Myst, work very hard to make Bethlehem, PA a holiday city. I am not saying don't visit Bethlehem during holiday season. Do not set expectations high or believe a word of ads / promotions.
Trust me, headline is easily earned. Bethlehem, PA is promoted as Christmas City. It is only a title for a small town that exemplifies Lehigh Valley localism. Talk big, lack of action to back it up, re-defining egotism at holiday season. Plus, city government has zero problem enforcing Christianity / Judaism at Payrow Plaza, located between City Hall / Library (Nativity / Advent Candles / Menorah). Zero representation of other beliefs including Paganism which Christmas was stolen from. Do the research, seriously. Science proved Christians celebrate the holiday at wrong time of year. Sorry the "Moravians founded Bethlehem" pathetic excuse doesn't hold in 2023.
Back to the "Obscene lack of Christmas" part...
All claims / ads / promotions highlight an extremely small part of this small town (they call it a city). Check some photos / videos in this article. Reality check here: Pole decorations end at 8th avenue. Drive take bus down West Broad from Pennsylvania. Rose Garden not decorated. Other than tree lighting no major events. White lights on North side (main st.) prove how the small town is stuck in the past, representing Moravians. Colored lights on South side? Multi-nationalities settling there for Bethlehem Steel. You know, that company who "helped build America", collapsed due to corporate / union greed. Hate to tell mayor / town council / local chamber / etc.: WE ARE IN 2023 NOT 1893!!!! Get the fuck over the past already!!!!! Welcome to the Lehigh Valley.
What used to be a main tourist / visitor draw: Huts / Christmas Village based on German Village near Broad and Main have been degraded to some huts at far end of Main St. Unless you walk past a seriously overhyped historic Hotel Bethlehem, will completely miss these vendors.
Main St. features the "Only live Advent Calendar in U.S. maybe the world." Not joking, straight from a promotion I heard on TV. Moravian Christmas Putz is cool to experience, 1 time. A few events like Historical Trees tour might be worth the money. South side only feature? Beautiful decorations (Steelstacks / ArtsQuest / Christkindlmarkt). Speaking of Christkindlmarkt, other than Friday 5 - 8 p.m., seriously overpriced admission (another article).
Like I said, if you don't believe the hype / ads / promotion, expectations are low, "The Christmas City" will not disappoint. Shops on / off Main St. offer great ideas for gifts / treating yourself. Carriage rides give a quick tour. Igloos in Sun Inn Courtyard ($30 / hr.) for a quick warm up. Food truck with very limited food menu. Lehigh Valley pushes alcohol like you would not believe. Advance warning / a few more details.
