Break Free foundation
Important Note: Did not make request for press pass / credentials due to having zero experience w/ fashion. Apologies for no runway photos / videos.
Break Free NYFW was part of my intro to NY fashion scene. This was THE main event for FireCity Illusion.
Noticing event on social media, the benefit part seriously caught my attention. Decided on VIP due to benefit aspect / why not for an intro? Arrived in time for non-alcoholic cocktails / check out vendors. Right off, ladies checking in made me feel like I belonged there (friendly / professional). Honestly, was worried I was under-dressed (dress jeans / button down shirt / nice sneakers / Lee faux leather jacket / my business pro look). Looked around, ok I am good! Zero idea what to expect, even though it was my 2nd fashion show.
Walking around, checked out vendors / beverages. Mocktails / non-alcoholic beverages were perfect. Had a strawberry equivalent of Seagram's wine coolers. Seriously, could not taste difference. Lack of buzz very welcome (didn't eat much during the day). After Opening Remarks / Introductions start runway show! A welcome surprise considering I was expecting wild fashions very people would wear or could afford.
Valt, for a 1st timer, provided the perfect start. Ranging from everyday to evening out, designs gives everyone a glimpse into creative process / imagination of this designer. In addition, a desire to reach wider demographic. Subtly standing out while blending in simultaneously.
Kelsey Zephyr (Zephyr Brand) overall theme of maroon with different colors not for variety. This shows the designers experience and experimentation. Not being afraid to take chances. It appeared to this newbie Kelsey, like Valt, wanted to focus on fashion for everyone not only elitists. Dresses and even something different for a hot romantic night highlighted the collection. Where Kelsey excelled at this show was variety and creativity using only a few colors.
Dukiri Apparel (Daniel Duikiri) was a personal favorite of the show. Showing a true passion / experience on the street level. His designs / creativity are the style I see walking the streets of Manhattan / Philadelphia. Appearing with a "This is who I am and my style". Daniel's creations range from everyday casual / on the court / even a casual night out or for casual date. By the start of fashion show, felt like I blended in. Daniel's part of the show seriously helped me relax / focus.
Just U Kids Production exhibited part of their Just Us Teens creations. Catching me off guard with some wild designs / including a few credits to Steampunk. They widened range / variety of what is considered fashion. Honestly, I could see kids / teens easily wearing some of those creations. Even some adults / not only for Halloween.
LadyCat: Perfect Finale to an incredible show! Combining wide variety of designs for everyday style with unique creations for formal events / night out. Alexandra Nyman had a few complete surprises (again for fashion newbie): Resembling classic royalty with one / drop dead gorgeous (pun intended) black combination for wedding / funeral (def. fav.). Ms. Nyman had zero problem showing her disagreement with Mayor Adams' Kendra's Law (force hospitalization for signs / mental illness). Regardless of anyone's opinion on subject, this greatly increased my respect for Ms. Nyman. Curious? Ms. Nyman included this aspect as an important part of the show. Made absolute zero attempt to force her views on audience.
Special performance by Wyn Starks another major highlight! Honestly, Rock fav genre, hate to admit never heard of him. During after-party, noticed people having conversations with him. Normally I avoid celebrities. Reason: they are constantly approached by fans / media / photographers. Experiencing his powerful voice / performance, approached to compliment. Mr. Starks was very friendly in a genuine way. No slight hint of "Ok, need to do this. When can I get out of here."
I cannot thank Alexandra Nyman / everyone at the Break Free Fashion Show for an unexpected / excellent experience! Did have a chance to speak with Ms. Nyman and complimented her on everything. 1st fashion show grabbed my curiosity about New York Fashion Scene. Break Free solidified a new area FireCity will be covering. After the show, even over a week later, coming up with article / interview ideas, especially on behind the scenes.
