Philadelphia chinese lantern festival
6th year for this festival! 2nd year covering / attending (special thanks to Carri Feiler Bender) for the invite! 2022 was impressive to say the least. 2023: straight up with a lot of surprises!!!!
Walking in, you don't know where to start. Usual plan: quick walk around then photos / take time at each display. Seriously, especially if you attend after sunset, figure at least 90 minutes, including food / Dragon Bar. I am very serious about all 3. Need to have full experience!
Every year, they combine tradition with new experiences. Tradition: 60-foot-long dragon / new experiences: A lot of animation / interactivity (see photos / video). One thing I didn't notice until leaving: animation at entrance arch, very cool!
Walking in, felt like I was entering a Chinese Garden. This year, overall feel was something strange to me: very calming / naturally high tense. Now for the timeframe you will WANT TO SPEND HERE. Don't forget to bring the family (kids / parents / cousins / siblings / 3rd cousins twice removed...).
I did 2 laps around the festival (TikTok post / video article) missed a few that I caught on round 3. Translation: Surprises part: everywhere you look, something new! Part of the surprises. There is more than just walking around / eating / drinking. Before I forget: Mini golf is also decorated for the festival, can't wait to experience this part.
Experience Chinese Culture: Live entertainment on stage, you have to check website for that one. Fountain show is excellent any time. During the festival, they go all out / holding nothing back. Friday / Saturday, Cultural Connections (learn to make a dumpling and more). Back to the food, honestly, Chinese food is not a favorite. Had to go for full experience here. Meat Dumplings / Fried Shimp Wonton was incredible and very filling! Considering I was on a Sizzli / cheese dog / cupcake all day.
This year seriously impressed and topped 2022 by a long shot. If you don't have a chance to experience after dark, you can still check out the sculptures / displays during the day. For full experience, go after 6 p.m. and stay after sunset (best bet: Friday / Saturday evening).
2023 Chinese Lantern Festival is something you must experience (the only word). Seriously, scroll down for photos / video review and more.

Daytime photos
Until 6 p.m., Franklin Square is open and free (business as usual). In case you can't attend at night / don't have budget, You can experience the amazing sculptures. Take time to walk around. I found a few missed on 2 laps at preview night. Still highly recommend a night visit if possible for full experience (weekends preferably). I may do an overnight later in July. Definitely going to get a ticket for another visit.
