Interview
Where did the idea for Fan Expo Philadelphia come from? How did it start?
FAN EXPO took over the former Wizard World Philadelphia show, which ran from 2001-2019 until the pandemic. It sprang from the old Wizard Magazine and was the second-longest-running Wizard World show after Chicago when FAN EXPO acquired the series in 2022.
Fan Expo Philadelphia started at the highest level and went straight up. How has it evolved?
The 2022 show was the first time back for a lot of fans, and they came back in full force last year. This week's show is tracking even bigger, and a lot of it has to do with the standout celebrity and creators field, but even more important is the sense of community that this show has fostered in fans and continues to do so.
I noticed equal importance is placed on all aspects. Celebrity guests share the same spotlight as Artist Alley and indie creators. How important is it to highlight all sides of the event?
Everyone is a fan of something, and even within groups and families that attend together, the main attraction for particular fans is diverse. It's important to make sure that this variety of interests are well represented across genres.
Fan Expo Philadelphia has an almost perfect balance all aspects. Example: celebrities / main guests, artist alley, gaming, cosplay, panels / discussions. How important / difficult is this balance to the success of the event?
You've identified a key concept at FAN EXPO shows with this question. Someone may come to our show because they are big fans of "The Office" or "Star Wars," but leave with a completely new favorite thing. Our panels help bring together people from all different backgrounds and ages who love the same things, but there is a joy in the serendipity of running into something new and discovering why it's so interesting.
I noticed Fan Expo Philadelphia extends beyond the Pennsylvania Convention Center, especially After Hours. Giving people a chance to experience the city. How important is involving the community outside of the main location? Personally, this is a main aspect I love about the event.
Each of our shows is different in this important way. Whether it's a panel like 'Philly’s Got Talent: FAN EXPO Edition' or the Sip 'N Color at the Aloft, or creators and exhibitors you'll only see at our Philadelphia show, we want fans to experience what it means to be the premier pop culture show in the city, and how that connection to Philadelphia makes the event unique.
I remember from Fan Expo 2023, listening to feedback from guests is a main priority. How much does this affect future events?
Feedback is welcome and encouraged; we learn from fans just like they discover new things at our events. What are the trends in various areas of pop culture they want more of? What are the shows and movies they are talking about most and anticipating? Who have they never met that's on their bucket list? Tell us!
