Franklin Square April & May Events
Franklin Square welcomes the young and young-at-heart alike to springtime fun!
· Earth Weekend in Franklin Square
o Saturday, April 20, 12-2 pm – Celebrate Earth Day with FREE children’s activities including learning about birds and making a bird craft with the Bird Nerd of the Wissahickon. FREE games, giant bubbles, music, fitness fun, and play party for children with YoYo.
o Sunday, April 21, 1-4 pm – Join the Climate Action Campaign and partners for a Climate Solutions Now Earth Day Block Party to celebrate the great strides that have been made to combat climate change and the need for climate solutions now. This free event features performances by local Philadelphia artists including Speedy Ortiz, a speaking program, activities for kids and families, free food, and much more.
· Franklin Square Season Opening Day, (Saturday April 27, 11 am – 1 pm) – Springtime in Franklin Square means the spectacular Rendell Family Fountain is back on and dancing to music, the SquareBurger grill is sizzling, the carousel is spinning, and new trees are being planted, all ready for the season ahead. Come for FREE rides aboard the Parx Liberty Carousel (11 am – 1 pm), and the opening day first performance of the Franklin Square Fountain Show (12 noon, and then every 30 minutes).
o Sip & Shop for Mother's Day Gifts (Saturday, April 27, 12 - 5 pm) – Have a cocktail from The Wine Garden West in the Pavilion Bar then head outside to shop for unique, hand crafted, gifts for mom from all female-owned vendors. JUST ADDED!
o A water fountain in a park
Description automatically generatedFranklin Square Fountain Show (Opens Saturday, April 27, at 12 noon, shows run every 30 minutes from 12 noon – park closing, daily) – The 186-year-old historic Rendell Family Fountain dazzles with a spectacular show featuring choreographed lights and water. Fountain jets dance magically with dramatic lighting and music as LED lights glisten for visitors. Guests visiting the park day or night can enjoy free choreographed “performances” that showcase the historic infrastructure of the fountain. DATE NEWLY ADDED!
· Bark in the Park (April 28, 12-2 pm) – Fun doggie-friendly activities.
· FREE monthly classes in MAY (and through the summer):
o Parenting Skills Class (2nd Thursday of the month, Through September, 10-11 am) – Kaila Dickstein, Psy.D. discusses topics and tools for new parents such as parenting and career, from baby development through early years.
o Yoga in the Square (Fridays, Through August 30, 10-11 am) – Bring a yoga mat for free outdoor Kundalini Yoga. All experience levels are welcome.
· Storytime in the Square (Every other Wednesday, May 1 – September 18, 11 am-12pm) – Join Ms. Chen from Independence Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia for free storytime and crafts in the Pavilion. Stories, rhymes, and dancing explore different themes throughout the season ending with bubbles and fun crafts. All kids and their caregivers are welcome.
· National Mini Golf Day and Franklin Square Play Day (Saturday, May 11, 12-2 pm) – Free fun crafts and games, giant bubbles, live music, fitness fun, and play for children with YoYo. For National Mini Golf Day, buy one ticket and get one free all day at Philly Mini Golf.
· Franklin Square Play Day (Saturday, May 25, 12-2 pm) – Free fun crafts and games, giant bubbles, live music, fitness fun, and play for children with YoYo.
Year-Round Attractions in Franklin Square
· Philly Mini Golf: Putt around the city on this Philadelphia-themed miniature golf course. $13 adults/$11 children (3-12), guests 2 years of age and younger are FREE with paid accompanying guardian
· Parx Liberty Carousel: A zebra, a lion, an eagle, horses and more! Hop on this spectacular all-American style carousel with hometown racehorse heroes Afleet Alex and Smarty Jones. $4 per person (adult or child), guests 2 years of age and younger are FREE with paid accompanying guardian
· Playgrounds: Slides, swings, and spinners…bring the kids and enjoy two playgrounds! Open year-round and free.
· SquareBurger: SquareBurger has a delicious menu operated by Cooperage. Food options include burgers, fries, and classic thick milkshakes including the legendary Original Cake Shake made with Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets®. Hours vary by season, visit historicphiladelphia.org for schedule and full menu.

Franklin Square, Philadelphia’s original green space, is a beautiful oasis in Historic Philadelphia. Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is the non-profit that renovated, funds, manages, and operates Franklin Square. First created as an open space by William Penn in 1682, the seven-and-a-half acre Franklin Square offers family fun in one of the city’s most charming historic parks filled with expansive lawns and shady trees. Award-winning Franklin Square features the Rendell Family Fountain, one of the country’s oldest public fountains featuring a daytime and nighttime water and light show, Philly Mini Golf, Parx Liberty Carousel, two playgrounds, and SquareBurger, operated by Cooperage. After a day of experiencing the treasures of Philadelphia’s history, putt through some of the city’s most famous icons, take a ride on hometown racehorse heroes Afleet Alex or Smarty Jones aboard the carousel, swing along with the dancing water of the fountain, and dine on the finest burgers and shakes in town.
