Gov. Cox appoints John Harvey as Public Service Commission member
SALT LAKE CITY (May 11, 2023) - Gov. Spencer Cox has named John Harvey as a member of the Utah Public Service Commission. Appointments to the PSC are subject to approval by the Utah Senate.
“I’m thankful John is willing to join Team Utah as a Public Service Commission member,” said Gov. Cox. “Few have the breadth of experience in this highly technical field as John does and I’m confident he will serve the citizens of our state well.”
Harvey has more than 30 years of experience in utility regulation, with the bulk of that time working as an economist/utility technical consultant for the Utah Public Service Commission. His duties focused on analyzing industry conditions, modeling utility systems and exploring scenarios to meet public policy objectives. He also worked at XENERGY, Inc., Utah Department of Commerce, and as a professor at the University of Phoenix.
Harvey received a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s of Science in Economics-History from Utah State University. In addition, he received a Master’s of Science in Economics and a doctorate in Economics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
"The Public Service Commission fulfills a vital role for Utah and its citizens as it balances the need for low cost, safe, and reasonable utility service on the part of residents and businesses with need to keep our utilities financially healthy by allowing them to charge just and reasonable rates to recover their prudently incurred costs,” Harvey said. “Utah (and the country) faces significant challenges in the coming decades as the very nature of our energy utilities evolves in response to changes in the legal landscape in which they operate and I look forward to contributing to Utah's regulatory process as it navigates its way through the coming challenges. I thank Gov. Cox for this opportunity to serve."
