INHERITANCE follows Curtis from age 12 to 18 as he grows up in a small, rural town on the edge of the Ohio River in a family where every adult is battling addiction.
Filmed over 10 years we are immersed in a world of love, struggle and hope through the eyes and experiences of one boy and five generations of his extended family. Curtis’ grandma, Cheryl, the family matriarch, acts as our guide into Curtis’ world. We watch as Curtis leaves boyhood behind and moves toward an uncertain future.
This is an often forgotten America where hopelessness like poverty is a birthright and escape is often just a dream.
The husband and wife filmmaking team behind INHERITANCE, producers and directors Matt Moyer and Amy Toensing, are filmmakers, acclaimed photojournalists and National Geographic Explorers. For over 30 years their works have been featured by top outlets including National Geographic magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and PBS.
