iThrive Games and The History Co:Lab merge to transform learning, accelerating the role of young people as makers of our shared history.
iThrive Games has officially joined The History Co:Lab to form an intergenerational collective rooted in the belief that the future of democracy depends on youth thriving. Together with partners, The History Co:Lab aims to replace outdated and ineffective one-size-fits-all approaches to education with a learner-centered model that nurtures and challenges all young people to be emotionally resilient, informed, and engaged contributors to their communities.
Since its inception in 2019, The History Co:Lab has been driving systemic change towards humanity-centered learning, catalyzing communities, weaving collaborations, and co-creating with young people. It has advanced a youth-centered, community-connected approach to learning for democracy, with key achievements including civic learning ecosystems in Kansas City, MO, and Pittsburgh, PA, co:leadership of a civic museum network, and the award-winning and Ambie®-nominated youth-led podcast UnTextbooked.
Now, with the integration of iThrive Games—renowned for harnessing the power of play and technology to advance teens' academic learning and social and emotional skills—The History Co:Lab is poised to shape the world’s educational landscape with pioneering learning tools and rigorous science and assessment.
"Our merger with iThrive Games signifies a pivotal moment in our journey towards reshaping the future of learning," shares Dr. Fernande Raine, Co-Lead and Founder. "Traditional civic learning efforts have missed two things: the fact that young people need to thrive before they can civically engage, and the power of radical collaboration in how we work towards change. This merger symbolizes our commitment to using learning science backed pedagogies, including play, projects and place, and to do so with other partners.”
At the heart of The History Co:Lab's strategy is its enduring commitment to history not as a static archive, but as an active lens for shaping a better tomorrow. Its impact-driven collective works through three interdependent strategic initiatives:
Creation Co:Lab, run by iThrive Games, co-designs games, curriculum, experiences, tools, and programs with and for young people that transform learning for them.
Catalyze Co:Lab connects and convenes communities to transform local, regional, national, and global civic learning ecosystems.
Narrative Change Co:Lab communicates and showcases practices promotive and protective of young people’s thriving to transform narratives about their learning and wellness.

This powerful combination of educational innovation, community-building efforts, and story-based advocacy will foster an educational transformation that is responsive to and supportive of young people. “Our social structures are not currently designed to support the wellbeing of young people. They do not take into account how the adolescent brain is developing and functioning,” shares Dr. Susan Rivers, Co-Lead and Chief Scientist. “The mission of our collective is to co-design new ways of learning with young people, for young people. It matters for them and it matters for our collective wellbeing.” Young people will be active in the work of developing engaging, impactful, and relevant experiences and products aimed at developing humanity; these products scale learning that delivers belonging, growth, and wellbeing.
This landmark merger, supported in part with funding from SeaChange Capital Partners and with strategic collaboration from Kapwa Leadership and Ropes & Gray, marks a new era of learning where youth-centered, community connected learning is the new standard for education. “This work is critical to the very wellbeing of our democracy, and we know we can’t do it alone,” said Fernande Raine. “We are inviting other innovators, educators, communities and young people to weave with us and transform learning today so that young people can thrive as history makers for a better tomorrow.”
