stories in photos
Recently, had a chance to view an exhibit by Maagnifique Photography at Race St. Cafe / Philadelphia. Had the serious pleasure of working with Kristin (owner / professional photographer) in 2023 for profile photos (previous review / interview). At Race St. Cafe, had a chance to experience another side of her photography.
In profile / headshot / people photos, Kristin creates a story vs. telling one. At times, placing you in the photo. This is what she does in the exhibit. A more "in the moment" / street level photography, she captures the ordinary and gets our curiosity going with "what makes this different / the real story here". Photos like the carousel make us feel like we are in that moment. Or definitely want to experience it.
Race St. Cafe is the best / possibly not a great place for this exhibit. Connecting with the street / community level fits perfect with photos she chose for the exhibit. When I visited, it was crowded. Serious drawback because sitting at the bar, was trying to not look out of place while viewing her photos. I could think of a few galleries (especially in NYC) that would be PERFECT for a future exhibit.
With this exhibit, Kristin proves her flexibility / adaptability as a professional photographer. When working with her, provided a basic idea of what I wanted. She went in directions / levels I didn't think possible. In other words, the best photographer to make me look good in front of the camera. This exhibit combines her unique style of people with a new dimension. It also shows her true love / passion of photography.
