nimona
Fuck! That was an excellent, kick-ass film!!!!!
Original response after 1st viewing of Nimona. After viewing press materials, part of Nimona's plot revolves around 2 male knights. Honestly, don't care about gender / sexual orientation, period! Relationship between Ballister and Goldenloin does affect other parts of story. It faded into background for me.
Nimona incorporates different formulas into the plot. On the surface, catering to stereotypes (example: acceptance / betrayal / how we see others on the surface / a few others). You know, the typical "Heard / seen it before." "What the fuck, Seriously?!?!" Boring / overrated / overdone societal bullshit.
Pay attention around the 9:15 mark. First serious humor in the film. Did a rewind about 3 times for it. Also Nimona's appearance in the film. The humor continues throughout the film. It is an essential part and always well-placed. Used as part of the normal conversation. Other times, to add believability / relatability to characters. As a surprise factor, you never know when especially Nimona will have a perfect one-liner. Humor subtly helps convey film's messages.
Manipulation / deception, from personal to large scale is a main theme of Nimona. Director of The Institute down to one of the Knights. Forcing us to look at this life aspect from a different angle / the outside. How we can be caught up in it without personal realization of true situation(s). The damage it does to us and people we love / care about. Our search for the real truth in those situations.
Another main theme, this one hits on the personal level (don't ask): looking for a place to belong / a place to truly call home. Nimona has searched for this her entire (very long) life.
Towards the end, we experience how being pushed to far can bring out what people want to see in us. In the case, the true monster. How hard / nearly impossible it can be to change our true nature, regardless of what it is.
We not only experience / see how Nimona and Ballister change throughout the film. We feel it and their true emotions without even realizing it.
Nimona hits perfectly in so many area / topics. Making points about our society / lives / world without being obvious about it. Using humor / personal experience / other methods to making us relate to characters / situations. I fucking loved this film!!!!! Like I said: "Fuck Yeah!" No other way to phrase it.
On a final note: Nimona reminds us of a few things, especially at the end. How we can change regardless of choices we made in life. There is one almost heartbreaking scene at the end. Showing how one act can change people forever...
