Play NYC is always a top / premier event for my media. Right off, THANK YOU to everyone at Playcrafting / exhibitors / staff / security / attendees for making an amazing event. 2022: New venue / Chelsea Industrial.
This year, to a point, it appeared Playcrafting was reinventing Play NYC. New venue, overall, just had that feel. They maintained core of what makes it great: Perfect variety / balance of games (genres / styles / video and tabletop). Main focus on everyone having a great experience. Leading to my next point...
Any event, security is huge with me. Playcrafting continues to make that a top priority. Right off, bag checks when entering. Inside, they stayed on the edge, seriously watching the crowd. When the floor closed, check everyone for badges (industry after-party). Even when I stepped out for a quick cigarette / break, bag / camera bag checked on re-entry. Very special thanks to Playcrafting / security team.
New venue was excellent on space. Arrived around 2 (I think), steady flow of attendees. Enough to keep exhibitors busy. Not overcrowded / shoulder-to-shoulder. Playcrafting relied on previous events in planning this one. Going back to developer / game balance:
Video / tabletop were given equal priority. There was a main section for tabletop / a few spread out. Different genres / styles were present (Ex: rpg / video / tabletop combo, card, tabletop). Video genres: fighting / adventure / rpg to start. Technologies: pc / console / virtual and augmented reality. 2 exhibitors: chance to learn game development.
Another aspect I seriously love about Play NYC? Experiencing new ideas / concepts / creativity of indie developers. Taking chances, building on history of gaming / designing for current technologies / imagining future of gaming and our concept of reality. Some developers making social change.
Even if you are not into games, make Play NYC an important event to attend next year. You will have a great time learning what indie creators are seriously capable of. Make sure you bring the family / kids!
