Honestly, I thought this one would have a sci-fi edge to it. Didn't need it in the slightest. Listed as Drama / Women / Action, the Action category might be a stretch. The Future didn't need to be a great film. Drama / characters / plot / pace and more easily carried it. My first glimpse into Israeli filmmakers.
Containing / following through 3 connected storylines, director / screenwriter Noam Kaplan pulls us in 2 directions almost simultaneously. Sympathy, primary even for Yaffa (young woman who murders Minister of Space and Tourism). Especially for Nurit a scientist interviewing Yaffa for research purposes.
A part of Nurit's story is revealed through interviews with scientist Nurit. Nurit's story has several aspects: Maintaining a cold, professional, distance interviewing Yaffa while dealing with personal struggles. Mainly, not being able to carry a child. Getting to know a potential surrogate who seriously wants to help Yaffa with a child. Add in a relatively chilled attitude towards her mother. Which we only have a brief glimpse into that part of her life. Another area of her life we only have a glimpse of: Yaffa's relationship with her husband. Who we never actually see but hear his voice.
Noam, Samar Qupty (Yaffa), Reymond Amsalem (Nurit) do a phenomenal job of maintaining all aspects of this film. The suspense part really maintained my interest. Throughout the film: "Something is going to happen on a major scale to Nurit (kidnapped / murdered / you get the idea). It never did, no complaints here! One major did happen: losing the moon lander "Hope". While not a necessary part of the film, this added to realism and why I didn't pause for a moment. Serious credit to composer David Klemes. Musical score was anything but boring. In the background, providing a serious extra edge, especially in the suspense part.
I could add several paragraphs here. Another film where review could hit the 79 min. mark of film. Going to spare your eyes. The Future is way out of my normal genres (sci-fi / fantasy). While not even close to what I expected, The Future is seriously a film I could re-watch multiple times. Knowing there are subtleties I missed on round 1. Combining excellent directing / acting / musical score with perfect pace / wanting to learn more about main characters / so much more. The Future needs to be in the top of your "must experience" list. I didn't watch "The Future" I experienced it. Oh, title and "The Future" in film add another (possibly frightening) aspect to the film.
