The Gullspang Miracle:
First reaction: What the FUCK did I experience???? Checking out press material / synopsis, this one made the list. After 2 film blocks, wanted another feature. This film had several aspects I didn't expect.
Starting off: May is looking for an apartment / finds a painting she has been looking for in the kitchen. She buys apartment / moves in with Kari. Simple start, completely honest: almost bailed out / fast forward. Kind of a slow start that picked up in pace / surprises.
Enter Olaug: This part I could personally relate to in a different sense (sorry, no personal stories here). A woman looking for her family. After a DNA test, meets May + Kari as half-sisters. Usual story so far. A few highlights otherwise review be as long as film (1:49).
Mystery / Suspense are a main surprise at this point. After Olaug meets other siblings, questions arise about what is believed to be her twin (deceased). Another part I could personally relate to different versions of the story. Originally believed to be a suicide, changes to natural causes and a third version. Throw in a 2nd DNA test contradicting the first.
Now for the "What the FUCK did I experience????" Towards the end, was not sure if The Gullspang Miracle was documentary or fiction. End of movie proved documentary.
Director Maria Fredriksson does an excellent job on maintaining a suspension of disbelief during key moments of the film. Not sling shotting us in different directions. More like: straight line, suddenly going different directions / straight line.
Overall, story line moved forward at a consistent pace. Acting is at an exceptionally high level. Each character showing a very believable range of emotions depending on situation. As movie progressed, had the "Ok, what will happen next" becoming completely absorbed in the film. End: Wanting the same answers as characters.
The Gullspang Miracle was a serious surprise for me in the best of ways. Starting with a "want to bail out on this one". Around the midpoint "Want more! Need to find out the answers". Amazing job to everyone involved with the film.
