the hole / bowery
Title IX is a 2-part exhibit between The Hole Tribeca / Bowery. After reviewing Tribeca part, very curious about other half. Bowery part added another aspect I didn't notice at Tribeca: How much corporations have control over sports. Other aspect I noticed? Creations at Bowery seriously highlighted how sexuality can give us a misconception of sports.
Corporate Control of sports: We are so used to advertising never notice when it is slipped in or takes over an aspect of our lives. Bowery part of exhibit made me think about how some sports (baseball a primary example) are almost completely dominated by ads. Realize I am going a little far from theme of exhibit. I observe art in different, sometimes strange ways.
Sexuality / misconception of sports: Starting with professional sports, uniforms (beach volleyball anyone m / f?) A few of the paintings made me realize how uniforms / clothes can distract from athlete / sport. Watching beach volleyball, paying more attention to bodies vs. game. Not realizing how long athletes train / sacrifice to achieve that level. Beach volleyball was first sport I could think of. This point applies to other sports as well, not all, but some. Social media adds to this misconception.
Both exhibits were excellent, challenging you to see sports in a different way.
