Uss Intrepid Museum
USS Intrepid Museum has been on the high priority list since 2022. After attending 2 suicide prevention walks on the pier remember feeling how small I felt next to the ship. This summer, noticed 20% discount on admission. Time to check it out! For a change, decided to take my time on this one.
The tour did not disappoint in the slightest. Prefer to explore on my own vs. guided tour. Purchasing tickets could not resist Apollo VR experience. Due to late decision, could not post any photos from Intrepid due to policies (check website).
Boarding Intrepid: 1st part is deck with museum / explorium. Museum had everything (large Lego Intrepid) / interactive history / several interactive displays and more). Gemini 3 capsule replica with Intrepid history on recovery. Did 1 lap and could not wait to set foot on flight deck...
Can not describe the rush and feeling I had walking onto flight deck. One side had planes / helicopters with information including tech specs (max speed / payload / brief history). Walking opposite direction, another main part I wanted to experience: Shuttle Pavilion!
As a kid, loved learning about space exploration. Still want to do 1 orbit around the planet (after I hit the lottery 3 times). Shuttle Pavilion had history of Apollo / space program. One of the best parts: Shuttle Enterprise! Walking around it, again, in complete awe / respect for everyone involved in the program. I was born in 1971 and remember the launch (watched in school). Also remember the Challenger explosion. The VR? Most immersive VR I have experienced. Inhuman fear of heights / falling. Had to remind myself 3 times I was sitting down.
After 3 hours, didn't have time for Submarine Growler part (next visit!). Overall, USS Intrepid is easily worth ticket price. Do not forget to bring family / kids. Before I forget one part of museum deck that is a MUST EXPERIENCE: Video of when ship was hit with 2 kamikaze planes during WWII. Not going to reveal surprise. Like the Battleship New Jersey, entire time, nothing but respect / admiration / awe for everyone who was stationed on Intrepid's long history. Definitely a second visit planned before end of summer. Growler will be 1st stop this time.
